Cincinnati Visitors

I moved to Cincinnati six years ago, and even though I have lived here a while now, I still have not seen all that Cincinnati has to offer. Whether you are a college student, in your 30s, young family or retired couple, you are sure to find something in Cincinnati to suit your tastes. From sporting events and zoos to night life and museums, there is something for everyone here for Cincinnati visitors.

Cincinnati is located on the Ohio River, just separating it from Kentucky. It was a literal border for slaves to cross into freedom and it was known as the Mason-Dixon line, separating the North from the South. Today, it is a blending of different cultures of North and South.

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

The Cincinnati Zoo is home to more than 500 species of animals. They have exhibits such as bats, snakes, bears, monkeys, turtles, crocodiles, lemurs, Bennett's wallabies, insects, cheetahs, lions, elephants, zebras, sea lions, giant anteaters, and skunks. You can also enter the petting zoo and feed goats, and children can play on a giant spiderweb. You can also get your picture taken inside a huge turtle shell. It's a great place for Cincinnati visitors with families to go visit, and they also have a beautiful botanical garden with many different types of plants. The zoo is located on Vine Street in Cincinnati. Admission is $13 for adults and $9 for children and seniors, but this does not include parking. You can save money by packing your own lunch, as outside food is allowed to be brought inside.

Reds and Bengals

If you are sports fan, you're in luck. In Cincinnati, we have three sports arenas in a row right on the river, and we are home to three major sports teams. We have the Cyclones hockey team, who play at the US Bank Arena. You can usually count on seeing a good hockey fight here. The Reds major league baseball team plays at Great American Ballpark. Maybe you'll catch a foul ball if you can snag good enough seats. The NFL Bengals play at Paul Brown Stadium. You can tailgate with the rest of the Bengals fans outside the stadium.

Sports events in Cincinnati are always a lot of fun, no matter if you are a huge fan or not. Seasoned fans know how to do it right here. Before you know it, Cincinnati visitors will find themselves screaming along with all the rest of the maniacal fans. I never knew how much fun sports could be until I attended the games in person. Prices range on these events, but you can usually either get discounted tickets or they have specials at the games on beer and food.

Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal

Union Terminal was built in 1933 as a train station and was declared a National Historic Landmark. It is most marked by its domed structure and inside has a rotunda. It now is home to the Cincinnati Museum Center, Museum of Natural History & Science, Omnimax Theater and Cincinnati Historical Society Library and Duke Energy Children's Museum. I recently went here to view an exhibit called Dinosaurs Unearthed, where skeletons and fossils were displayed. The exhibit had models of many different dinosaurs along with facts about them. The dinosaurs were shown as possibly having fur and feathers as new findings suggest. The Omnimax dinosaur film was pretty amazing too. I recommend checking this out, especially if you've never been to one before. The exhibit costs are $15 for adults and $10 for children. Exhibits are traveling so they change from time to time.

BB Riverboats

BB Riverboats began operation in 1977 and offers dinner, sightseeing, holiday, specialty and private charter cruises down the Ohio River. The port is in Newport, Ky., which is right across the river from downtown Cincinnati. You can choose between brunch, lunch and dinner cruises and the food is served buffet style. As you eat dinner, you can see the waves rocking by as you slowly cruise down the river.

I recently went on the Dixieland Jazz Dinner, which is only offered on Sundays. During this two-and-a-half-hour cruise, we traveled up and down the Ohio River on a two-story riverboat. After dinner, you can sit on the outer decks or on top and enjoy the beautiful scenery as the live band plays banjo, piano and clarinet and sings Dixieland music. You can watch boaters coast by as you enjoy the Cincinnati skyline. They also have a dance floor in the dining room. This is a good attraction because it is rain or shine. If the weather is a little sketchy, you can choose this event. The decks are covered except for the top one. It rained when I went, but we still had an amazing time, and I was glad we made it out. I recommend this to Cincinnati visitors who want to take it easy for an evening. Tickets are $39 for adults, $38 for seniors, and $21 for children, although coupons are frequently offered. It's best to make reservations for this attraction.

Cincinnati Art Museum

You can visit the Cincinnati Art Museum, located in Eden Park, close to downtown. It has been open since 1881 and has more that 60,000 pieces of art from more than 6,000 years of history. Its collection includes ancient pieces of art from Egypt, Greece, Rome, Africa, and America. Some famous paintings include those by Picasso and Renoir. The Cincinnati Art Museum hosts many different traveling exhibits. The museum also hosts the Cincinnati Wing, which is dedicated to the art history of the city. Admission is free to the museum as well as parking.

Eden Park is located in Mt. Adams, which has excellent small restaurants and bars within walking distance of the museum. They usually have outdoor seating, which is great to visit in the summer time. My favorite restaurant is Teak, which is a Thai restaurant. They have amazing Pad Thai and sushi, and have an artistic layout, especially on their patio. Down the street from Teak, Mt. Adams also has a scenic overlook so you can view the skyline and river from above it all. You can see all of downtown Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. This is also a great place to watch the Labor Day WEBN fireworks, which is a huge event here and they are set off on the Ohio River. This is a good time for Cincinnati visitors to make their way to the area.
