Contemporary lamp shade

 

The word contemporary in fashion and design means anything created after World War II.  So almost everything you see without a distinct design, like abstract, modern, or art deco would be considered contemporary.  There are many different types of contemporary are throughout the decades, and since this type of art could be transferred to a lamp shade we will go over them.  These are different types of contemporary design through the decades since the 1950's.

1950's Contemporary art styles:

• Abstract Expressionism:  This type of art was the first real art movement that came from America, and gained worldwide influence.  It made New York City the center of the western art world.  Abstract Expressionism is a random way of painting with a deliberate and structured way of creating art.

1960's Contemporary art styles:

• Hard-edge painting:  Is a style that uses large defining lines between different color areas.  Most of the time they are straight lines but can also be bent lines but still well defined.  Hard-edge painting is a form of forms of abstract art.

1970's Contemporary art styles:

• Bad painting:  Is a style that uses crude, and roughly drawn painting.  It is still used today to describe paintings.

 1980's Contemporary art styles:

• Graffiti:  Depending on who you talk to Graffiti is considered art, others consider it damaging property and mostly unwanted.  Graffiti has been recorded all the way back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.  Doing Graffiti in areas without the consent of the owners is considered a crime, and punishable by fines, and community service.  It is widely used in the Hip Hop culture and also by gangs which has given it the persona of being a crime.

It should be noted here that in the 90's and 2000's that real art is considered art styles that have been created in other decades.  Any new art styles that have been made during these times are mostly down on computers since they have become so popular and there are alot more things you can do with them.

Now to contemporary lamp shades, any of the styles mention above can be translated onto lamp shades.  A lot of people like to buy regular white lamp shades with the intentions of painting things on them themselves.  This can be done easily, and most of the time alot cheaper then buying lamp shades with designs already on them.

There are many different mediums you can use to decorate your lamp shades in a contemporary style.  You can use paints, you can also use fabrics to make desired shapes and styles.  Or you can always use both to get a very unique and one of a kind lamp shade.  The great thing about these are that you can use your imagination and come up with something that matches the decor of your room that you may not be able to find anywhere in stores or on the Internet.  Many people take advantage of this and make a little business out of it by selling their contemporary lamp shades on the Internet and other places where people might have an interest in them.
