Garmin or TomTom

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and it uses satellites to help guide you to your destination. Even though it relies on satellites, it is reliable enough to work in any weather. Contrary to what many people believe, there are no monthly fees to use GPS services. It is a free service to all civilians. We only have to pay to get a receiver. You can purchase these through any retailer, such as Best Buy, Walmart, and H. H. Gregg.

It was originally only meant for military use, but later became available for everyone to use. An unlimited amount of people are able to use the satellites for GPS at any time. The satellites transmit the information to GPS devices that we can use to navigate the roads. It shows us where all the roads are, where we are, where our destination is, and where we need to go to get there. It is a lifesaver for those of us who are directionally challenged or vacationing.

You can attach the device to the inside of your car by suctioning it to your dash or windshield. This way, you can easily look over to it and see where you are. As you are driving, it constantly updates to show you where you are. It can show you what time you will arrive at your destination given your current speed and traffic as well. You are also able to use GPS whether you are walking, boating or flying as well to guide you to where you want to go.

Whether or not you know your way around the area, GPS devices can come in handy. GPS is great if you are running low on gas or are hungry and want to find a restaurant. You can search for nearby locations and get directions to them. It will guide you direction to your destination. You can also find quicker routes or alternate ways of getting places you never knew existed. You can also choose to have your GPS to speak the directions to you or to show them on the map with words across the screen.

There are several different brands of GPS devices. The two most popular brands are Garmin and TomTom. Many people will swear by one or the other, but the truth is that the technology has reached such a standard that they have become pretty similar in their features. Garmin

Garmin is based in the Cayman Islands. Garmin's products are more focused on hand-held devices. These are meant for hikers and can have up to 30 hours of battery life. They also have few products for boaters that actually have sonar 'fishfinders' built in. Garmin also has a program to be loaded on laptops that use Microsoft. A lot of their products are meant for navigation while flying as well as driving.

 

TomTom

TomTom is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and makes GPS devices for cars, PDAs and cell phones. There are several different models of the TomTom GPS which include TomTom GO, TomTom ONE and ONE XL, TomTom RIDER, and TomTom NAVIGATOR. The TomTom has a touch screen, speaker, USB plug in and a Lithium ion battery. It can be charged in the car so you are never stranded without directions. The TomTom RIDER is meant for motorcycles and scooters.
