Miniature daschund puppies are often called wiener dogs. It is considered to be part of the hound family although it behaves much more like a terrier. It loves to dig, much like the terrier family of dogs, which are considered the 'earth dog' group. Standard daschund was bred to smell and chase badgers, while the miniature daschund was bred to hunt smaller animals like rabbits. There are actually three sizes of daschunds, but the United States and United Kingdom do not recognize the third type, the rabbit or toy.

Miniature daschund puppies are characterized by their short, stubby legs and long body. They grow to be less than 11 lbs. They typically have long wavy hair, but it is not uncommon for them to have short hair. Some will even have wiry hair but this is most common in Germany. Miniature daschund puppies can have a variety of colors as well. Some will have a single color, while others will have spots. Another common pattern is to be black with tan color points, which are around the mouth, eyes, stomach and paws. Some are black and tan, chocolate and cream, red, brindle and sable.
Miniature daschunds usually have dark eyes, but most of the time when their coat is light, their eyes will be lighter. Puppies whose coats are light will usually have amber, light brown or green eyes. It is rare to have a miniature daschund puppy with blue eyes, whether partial or fully blue. This is usually not desirable since it is usually linked to deafness and blindness.

They are muscular dogs and their skin sometimes seems loose and wrinkly around their bodies. Their paws are big and paddle like, which is ideal for digging holes. Their ears are long and do not stand up but they flop over to the sides. They are very playful dogs and make great watch dogs. Their bark is very loud and they are very loyal to their families. They take some time to warm up to strangers. They don't like people they don't know. The best way to prevent this personality trait is to introduce them to new people frequently from a young age. You can do this by going to dog parks with them or take them along with you when you run your errands.
They do not like to be left alone at home and will often cry until someone comes home. While they are home alone, they may also become destructive and chew on furniture. They are very smart dogs and are capable of escaping their cages sometimes since they get bored very easily. They have a lot of energy and are very curious. They love to be outside and chase small animals, dig holes, and run around. They do okay living in apartments, but they require regular walks and playing in the park in order for them to be mentally stimulated and physically in shape.
