The pitbull is also known as the American Pit Bull Terrier. The breed originated by breeders crossing bulldogs with terriers. They wanted a dog with the build and strenght of a bulldog but the hunting style of a terrier. Pitbulls usually have litters of between five and 10 puppies and they can live up to 12 years.

Appearance
Pitbull puppies can grow to be medium-sized dogs. They are very muscular and strong dogs with short, smooth coats. Their coats can be any color or variety of color combinations. The eithers can optionally be cropped or left to flop over. Their tails are kept long instead of being docked when they are young. The pitbull's head is described as a brick and its body is very stocky. Their neck is very thick because of their muscular physique. Typically, pitbulls grow to be about 35 to 55 lbs.
Mannerism
They have often been used in dog fights around the world, and are still used in such today. In the United States, dog fighting is a felony and they are mostly kept as pets. Some pitbull owners choose to call them Staffordshire Bull Terriers in order to avoid the bad reputation given to pitbulls. Their owners defend them, while some people push for legislation to euthanize them based solely on their breed. Pitbulls are not inherently mean, but they are raised to have this aggressive behaviour for dog fights. Many pitbulls live in animal shelters and face euthanization because their owners gave them up because of their bad reputation. Most people have been
conditioned to be afraid of pitbulls.
Pitbulls are not known for suddenly turning on their owner and attacking. They are known for being able to make decisions on whether or not they should become angry and attack. They can decide something is not worth it, or decide whether it is truly threatening them. Some people have been told of their powerful, jaw. However, studies show that their jaws are no stronger proportionately than any other breed of dogs. If a pitbull is not raise properly, he may become mean and dominant like any dog not raised properly. Any dog that is teased or abused will react aggressively, and pitbulls are no exception. They are not typically aggressive dogs, however, studies show that the majority of fatal dog attacks have been from pitbulls. This may because the name 'pitbull' is used to describe several different breeds of dogs. These statistics may be misleading. Although pitbulls are not typically aggressive toward people, if they are not socialize from a young age with other dogs, they may become aggressive with other dogs.
They are very good pets and very loyal to their owners. They are very protective of their human families and suspicious of people they do not know. However, they are very excited when they get to meet new people. They have lots of energy and are eager to please their human family. They need to be taken outside frequently or for walks as they need lots of exercise. They become bored easily and may become destructive as a result if they are left alone for too long.
They are very intelligent dogs, and because of this, they are very good at sports. Their owners may include them in weight pulling, agility, lure coursing, obedience competition, or flyball. These activities not only put their minds to the test but also their athletic bodies. They can also be used for search and rescue, police dogs, border patrol and service dogs.
